Blogging the Right Way for Your Business

September 22nd, 2014 No Comments

Blogging is one of the most effective ways to get attention for your business.  However, it often fails to meet its true potential because of some common errors.  Here is a look at a few tips of what not to do if you want your blog to attract the right people.

Don’t Focus on Keywords

Many people know the importance of using the right keywords to get noticed in searches.  However, focusing on this aspect of your blog alone will hurt you.  Provide quality information about something that your customers are interested in and you will attract more people to your site.  Think about problems people have when searching for that information and give them the solution rather than just using specific words to sell your products.

Don’t Ignore Your Customer

The best use of your blog is to provide communication with your customer.  Answer questions and provide information about your company and products.  For instance, if you get common questions from customers about a specific product, put those answers in a blog post.

Use your blog to solve customers’ problems.  Figure out what problem your customer would have that would lead them to your product or service and then go into detail about that topic on your blog.  This will appeal to a wider audience than if every post is about your company or products.  An example is talking about how to choose the best tennis shoes for runners if you own a shoe store.  You can quietly link to the relevant page without hitting them over the head saying “I have what you need.”

Don’t Ignore Trends

People search for information about what is going to happen so they can be prepared to deal with it.  If you ignore this aspect of your customers’ habits, you will miss out on potential markets.  For instance, if you sell weight loss products, you can blog about the latest research or the newest gadgets or diets for weight loss.  This will attract a bigger audience who are looking for the most updated information.

Don’t Give Your Opinion; Use Facts

Most of your customers don’t know you so they won’t trust your opinions or recommendations unless they are backed with solid facts.  Incorporate a study or research into information you provide.  One of the newest trends in blogging is adding infographs with interesting information in an easy-to-read format.

Don’t Rely Solely on Your Blog

You may have a great blog with targeted keywords and links, but that isn’t enough in today’s technology-based world.  Link your blog with your Facebook page, Twitter account, or Pinterest profile to make it work harder.  Combining a blog with social media is a way to double your efforts.

Don’t Forget to Have a Guest Blogger

While you want to be seen as the expert on your topic, it is helpful to add a different voice occasionally.  Invite leaders in your industry to do a blog post or even a customer who knows your business well.  This will help keep your blog fresh and interesting and can even encourage comments.

Blogging is an essential part of most businesses, but you must do it right to see the results you want.  Avoid common mistakes and you will not only get traffic but conversions for your site.
