How to Choose the Best Social Media Networks

When you sit down and read information about the various social media networks online today, it can get confusing.  You have Facebook and Twitter that everyone says you should get involved with.  Pinterest is the new game in town that is essential for businesses to get a jump on and Google Plus is important because…well, because it’s Google.  Oh, and don’t forget the power of videos with YouTube and if you have time, hang out on LinkedIn, too.  So, how do you choose between them and still make time for your business?

Do Your Research First

Do some research before you spend time setting up a profile on a bunch of networks.  Determine where your target audience is spending their time.  Find out if they are following other businesses similar to yours.  Notice what kind of media catches their interest or what they like to share.

Also, check out your competition to see where they are putting their focus.  Take the time to see if it is paying off for them.  Do they have a lot of followers?  Does it look like people are sharing their information, liking them, or retweeting their posts?  This can give you valuable insight into what is working and what might be a waste of time for your industry.  At the same time, pay attention to what they are doing to get more fans.  The reason it’s not working for them may be the lack of effort or wrong kind of effort and you could capitalize on this.

Learn about the Networks

Each network is unique and provides a different set of benefits for businesses even though the common goal is to attract more customers.  Understand how each one works to determine which one is the best fit for your business.  For instance, Facebook allows you to create offers just for your fans.  It also encourages businesses to use other forms of media such as video or photos to capture the attention of their audience.

  • LinkedIn is a great place to join groups where you can interact and ask or answer questions. It is also a useful networking tool for one-on-one conversation.
  • YouTube is an ideal medium for video tutorials or testimonials.
  • You can also provide regular updates on Twitter and get your followers involved in conversation.

Don’t Do Too Much at Once

Find one or two social networks and devote your time to them.  This is especially important if you are a small business so that you don’t overload your time.  The other problem with getting involved with too many platforms at once is that you won’t dedicate enough time to any of them to know if you are getting a good return on investment.

Give the networks some time before you decide that one doesn’t work for you.  This is not a get-rich quick scheme; it takes time to develop relationships with your audience.  Spend time regularly on your chosen network and learn the intricacies of how it works for businesses.  With the right amount of research and dedication, you can see major benefits from using social media for your business.
